Day 2 – Name Five Things You Love About Yourself

This is day 2 of the challenge posted by @Shining_Garnet.  This is a real challenge…I think for some reason we always scared that we sound arrogant or filled with pride if we dare to love something about ourselfs. The great teaching of Jesus the Christ was that we should love our neighbour like we love ourselves…. and that implied that love starts by loving yourself. If we do not love ourselve then we are unable to love others properly. True love comes from being a whole person…making peace with who we are and living authentically. You can not love if you are not authentic.

    1) I love my #name: “Jurgens”.  This name is my birth name which was given to me by my mother and my father. I am the fourth male being named Jurgens, which makes the name atreasured family name.  Derived from George or St George it means “to farm”. Shakespear asked “What is in a name?” when he wrote Romeo and Juliet. A name defines us even though we did not choose our birth name…that name is us. Part of life is to make peace with the name we were given as children and to learn to adopt it fully. I always like to name people on their birthnames when I express gratitude or love because that speaks to the person as a whole person. Every wizard knows the importance and power of discovering your magical name  but your birth name is as important…that is the name that defines you as a being in this world. I love my name.

    2) I love my #heritage. As an #Afrikaner I have to live with the burden of #Apartheid, the system that was used to surpress people based on race. But my Afrikaner and Danish heritage is part of who I am…it is the world in which I grew up and the world that formed me. Again it is making peace with where you come from that is part of the process of living a healthy life. I seek the best of my heritage…I try to build on the Nordic history that shaped the world of Bertel Pedersn, my Danish 6th Great grand father. I build on the spirit of adventure of Bertel Pedersen who traveled the seas and that of my forfathers who dared to defy British rule and who build where they settled. I love being an Afrikaner even if I am part of a small minority group fighting for its survival.

    3) I love my body. Truly I do…and no, I am not the most handsome. I really do not have the looks to brag with…but this body is protecting my soul and allows my #soul to interact with the physical world. The 5 senses are marvelous tools…through them we might experience pain and horror but it also gives joy and a unique experience of the physical world. Think about a sunset, a musical by Beethoven, the taste of a beautifully prepared curry dish, the feeling of standing under a shower with hot water or smelling grandma’s cookies. Irrespective how rich, famous or powerful we are we can seek beauty in the world and it is when we engage with #beauty when we start to experience something of the divine.

    4) I love my# individuality. There were times when I sought to be more like people wanted me to be. Those efforts always left me somewhat empty and unfulfilled. When I embraced my individuality it was as if I suddenly radiated from within. Sometimes people rejected me for who I am because I did not fit into their picture or acceptability. Being rejected is a painful price to pay for uniqueness and authenticity. But the pain was temporary as people that could not fit with my uniqueness was repelled, others were drawn into my small circle. These were true friends for they accepted my authentic self and not the illusion I created for others. Those friends are true friends because even the deficiencies of who I am will not betray me for they know me as I am. Their friendship is worth more.

    5) I love my #spiritual essence, the divine flame within me. This is my essence, the deepest part of my being…the seed of my full potential to be. I have only discovered parts of this precious inner part of me…as I reflect on the light of truth, live live fully and express love through compassion.  Being in touch with this core, the point of gravity of my inner being, I touched something with a sacred nature. Through this essencial part of my being I experience a new appreciation for #beauty expressed through art, the #mystery of life and divine #love.

So that is 5 things I love about my life: my name, heritage, body, individuality and spiritual essence. The old inscription on the Temple of Delphi read: “Know thyself” but today I say: “Be positive about thyself”
