2012 in review
Goals and objectives
2012 was an interesting year. From an astrological perspective Saturn left Libra my birth sign on 12 October 2012. A time of discipline and refocusing on basics came to an end. The foundation was laid for the way forward.
Health
My weight remained constant this year at about 84 kg which is still a good 10 Kg over my target weight. I had no major ailments during the year and was generally blessed with good health. My ears remain a weakness which can flare up in an ear ache at any moment in time. I only had some flu once for which I was booked off for two days to restore my equilibrium.
I started drinking Chinese teas this year and it was a wonderful journey of exploration into the diversity of Chinese teas like Jujube and Goji berry teas. I bought myself a Chinese tea set and am drinking regularly Chinese tea at work rather than coffee or soda's.
Physique - Tai Chi
I am in general happy with my physical achievements in 2012. I continued throughout this year with my Tai Chi training and gained an enormous amount of value from it. Tai Chi definitely drives away vapidity and invites into life more vitality. I experienced a greater sense of harmony, coordination and wholeness as a result of doing Tai Chi. I have been able to participate in Tai Chi at the local school through Shifu Suliman Sampson and at Parliament with Shifu M.J. Li. With Shifu Suliman I have learned the basic 24 forms and although I am still busy perfecting it I have gained some mastery of all 24 steps in the form. I have continued with the sword form but progress was slow. A highlight of the year was when I participated in a demonstration of Tai Chi at the local China Town chain of shops. We did 11 steps with Shifu M.J. Li as well as basic Kung Fu steps which resulted in an informal grading in the end of the year. I got an 8 out of 10 with a little certificate. The one lesson I learned from Shifu M.J. Li is that every opportunity is a learning opportunity ... irrespective what you are busy with. Tai Chi practice at work contributed to me broadening my sphere of friends. Doing Tai Chi in the Old National Assembly room was a significant moment for me.
In terms of Tai Chi it was a breakthrough moment for me when I could relate the 18 Armanen runes to the 24 Tai Chi form. It opened up a whole new way for me of engaging with both the Armanen runes and Tai Chi
Home
I am dissatisfied with my ability to have maintained my home mainly due to a lack of resources. The two most pressing issues is my swimming pool and the fire place in my home. The one for summer time and the other for winter time. My swimming pool had been out of order for most of the year due to a leakage I could not repair and the steel chimney of my fireplace corroded away. I manage to maintain all other assets like my car and the house is generally in a good state.
Family - General
A highlight of the year was catching a small snake in my home.
Family - Parenting
I have very good relationships with my two daughters but my relationship with my son require much more effort. There is nothing wrong with my son but my personality and my son's personality is vastly different from each other. I am particularly proud of my eldest daughter's achievements. Being mentally handicapped the world is a much bigger challenge for her than for most people. She joined Toastmasters last year with me and the organisation's training skills development in leadership and communication had an amazing impact on her. She has now completed 5 presentations from the manual and is half way to becoming a competent communicator certificate. Last week she managed the toastmaster club meeting as the Toastmaster. My club is a bunch of amazing people who accepted her and really all helping to develop in her the confidence to take on such a role. I have had time to develop my relationship with my younger daughter since she joined me doing Tai Chi and it gave us plenty of opportunity to talk about life. She has also adopted much of my mystical interests which meant that we often had the opportunity to talk about life. She is really blessed with much wisdom for a 16 year old. She has also done some amazing art this year that truly deserves to be recognized. I manage to go with my daughter for a day to the the Temenos Gardens in McGreggor where we meditated together and spend time walking through the gardens. My son participates in Stage coach where they learn the arts of drama, dancing and singing. Although I can not participate with him in that ...I am very proud of what he has achieved. Both my younger children did well academically at school and both of them excelled in art and culture. My boy won the price as the best culture student in the school and my daughter for being the best visual artist in her school. My son was the first boy academically in the school and 6th in his grade. I went with my boy earlier this year to watch a play at an opera. The most challenging moment for me this year was when I caught my son surfing gay websites. He is at the age of discovering his sexuality and being more into art than into sport he had to question whether he is homosexual. His investigation into sexuality and homosexuality in particular was not the challenge but I was disappointed that he could not talk to me as his father about it. In the end the whole ordeal led to a better relationship. I affirmed that our love and acceptance is not based on sexual orientation. I also told him it is natural that he will ask those questions and actually good that he does investigate his sexuality. I think I gave him good guidance on how to explore his preferences and warned him of the dangers in seeking advice from untested sources. That truly was the most difficult time of parenthood for me this year.
Finances
Finances leveled out without much highs or lows. I managed a tight budget, did not incur any new debts and actually reduced some of my debts to a minimum. There is no large amounts of cash lying around and I am financially high risk in the sense that I do not have much buffer to deal with major crises situations. My medical benefits, life cover, insurance and retirement planning are all way below what is desirable and remained a major concern for me. My only consolation is that I my only major debt is related to my car and my house debt. I earned a stable income and could fulfill my obligations and kept my family fed, clothed and happy.
Technology
My personal computer crashed totally this year and I replaced it with a new laptop - and HP pavilion g series. Not the biggest nor the fastest but sufficient to do my work with. My work laptop gave me problems the whole year and I am going to ask them to re-image the laptop in the start of 2013. I got a i-Pad on loan this year which gave me the opportunity to experiment a bit with i-pad technologies. I must say that I have not fully adopted or found true added value from the i-pad relative to my cell phone. However it was good to investigate the technology and how I can best use it in my life.
Computer gaming
I was off the computer gaming bandwagon this year. I saw many computer games through my children's eyes. My own computer gaming was absorbed in a network game that I started playing on my cell phone called Age of Legends. It is a typical war strategy game where one fight wars in a clan of maximum 10 people. I build a nice online friendship with my clan members since we interact on war strategies. The game is very static and not at all dynamic in terms of graphics but the game has a rich diversity in terms of strategies one can employ. I am proud to say that my clan is now ranked the number 2 clan in this online gaming world with about 2975 clans. I enjoyed building a quality team for this online gaming world and enjoyed devising strategies with them of how to get to the top rank.
Travel
A definite highlight for the year was my visit to Brussels to attend an XML conference at the European Parliament. It was a short but memorable journey and my first visit to the European continent.
Social - Toastmasters
I continued to be active as a normal member in Toastmasters. I did not fulfill any roles like I did in the past because I had basically done everything I had to do. The highlight of the year was to win the Division showcase for Afrikaans and going through to participate at the District's conference where I won the 2nd price for Afrikaans. Not just was it good to get a price but it was great to show the expressiveness of my native language. Earlier in the year i manage to compete up to division level with my humorous speech called: Points of failure. I got permission to start a new Toastmaster's club at our Parliament but have not started the club yet. The other highlight of the year was the opportunity to visit the Toastmasters club in Brussels and to give a presentation to them. I enjoyed feeling part of a global community and was so warmly received by the club that it remains a happy memory. I was awarded in this year by my club the award as the Toastmaster of the Year as well as the best prepared speaker of the year. It was a great honor for me to get these two awards.
Social - Blogging
I neglected blogging largely during this time. This is blog entry number 95 for this year which means I only blogged 25% of the days of the year. I also only tweeted a few tweets but overall blogging was low priority in this year and might continue to be until my PhD is completed. I have an issue with Xanga not being able to download my web archives.
Social - Friendships
I grew old friendships with those with whom I can share not just facts but also opinions and viewpoints. I am happy that there were growth in my friendships. A highlight was certainly going to a friends 50th birthday party where the theme was to dress your aged turned arround so he being 50 had to dress as if he is 5 years old.
Creativity - Art, poetry and music
My art was mostly neglected this year. I managed to complete only two oil paintings and currently have a third in progress which should be finished before the end of the year. The one was a painting of a lady's face and the other of a martial arts theme. I am currently busy painting a Buddhist monk. I have drawn only a handful of pencil sketches during this year. I was honored by somebody framing one of my previous year paintings and putting it up in her home. She reports back that she got many positive comments from it. I am happy to know a piece of art is hanging somewhere to beautify another person's home.
I wrote only one poem this year on disability day.
I was introduced to Taiko drumming this year. Something I really would like to take up but just dont have the time to make the commitment.
Training
I had the privilege of attending a few training sessions this year. Early this year I attended a change management workshop of two day where I was reminded of the importance of change management. In the latter part of the year I went on an Oracle APEX training where I learned how to develop software solutions using Application express from Oracle. The course was more challenging since my programming knowledge is a bit rusty but I quickly caught up and enjoyed the course. My division went on a team building course which was an excellent time not just to get to know my fellow workers better but it was also a time to reminded about what makes a team work.
Labor
It was my second year of a 5 year contract at the Parliament of South Africa. A less successful year from my own perspective. The main success was the successful implementation of the parliamentary content management system in our own unit. The implementation was hugely successful although it is limited in scale. The big disappointment for the year was that my performance reporting project was put on hold until further notice. I spend most of my year preparing for the implementation of a Business Intelligence solution. Everything went smoothly until the very last signature was required to approve the procurement process. However there was a change to the Secretary to Parliament and the whole process collapsed due to a lack of decision making. The project is still ear marked as a priority project but the there is concern about the readiness to adopt the solution. Nevertheless after having spend eight months of proofs of concepts, meetings, documents where the traffic light was green for go and then walking into a brick wall...was the biggest personal disappointment for me in this year. The benefit as part of the preparation is that I have finalized an information management framework and measured the information management maturity of the institution. In terms of my Business Analyst team we succeeded in getting the business cases signed off for several high tech projects that will make a big impact on Parliament's effectiveness and efficiency. My toastmaster skills was highly valued in being asked to do several presentations, key note speeches and facilitation of strategic planning meetings.
A small but significant change in this year was being able to park under cover this year and not outside. Parking undercover was a luxury I really appreciated.
Intellect - PhD
I finalized my PhD topic in this year and got approval to continue with my PhD. My topic: An industry information reference framework enabling semantic and syntactic interoperability in the industry of parliaments based on enterprise architecture design principles. I read a million of academic articles on information reference frameworks, enterprise architecture, interoperability etc. I wrote my first academic article based on my literature research for presentation at the COMA13 conference which is an international conference that will take place in early 2013. I need a minimum of two such articles to be published before I can get my PhD. My abstract was accepted but I have not had final feedback from the review board on the article itself. If the article is accepted then it will mean effectively that I have done 50% of the minimum requirement outside of writing my thesis. The article is titled: Competitiveness through collaboration and investigates seven industry information reference models and the basic components that is included in those reference models.
Spirituality - Rosicrucian
I continued with my Rosicrucian studies through AMORC and gained such an enormous value out of the studies. Not just from what they are teaching but also from the thinking that was stimulated within me. I have been asked if to consider leading our local group in 2013/14. I knew that it will require a huge investment of time that might unsettle several other areas of my life but after much deliberation decided to accept the opportunity. The bylaws state that the leadership role is only for a year and I felt that I received so much from the order that it is time to give something of value back in the form of service. I gave a presentation about what I learned from the Rosicrucian order to the Theosophical society. Another highlight was the 45 minutes presentation i gave at a conclave meeting called: The way of the heart - a journey towards wholeness. Both presentations were structured using the enneagram which is not a Rosicrucian symbol but still a good framework to use to impart my knowledge. I remain in debt to Gurdjieff and JG Bennett for exposing the methods of working with the enneagram as an organizing principle. I have grown in depth during this year in understanding and practicing mysticism. I am far from being an adept but that is of secondary importance. Primary importance is to continual on this path, which had been so life fulfilling for me.
My interest in divination systems are continuing and I recently bought myself a new Tarot deck called the Steampunk Tarot. I bought myself the Oswald Wirth tarot this year and received the Spanish tarot as a gift. I have been successful in meditating on a regular basis as part of by life habits.
Reading
I read many books this year...often those that I bought in earlier years to refresh my mind. Some of the new books I read were:

Personal spiritual book writing
I copied the following in my personal spiritual book where I copy texts that is of importance to me:
- 48 laws of power - A summary of the games people play to gain power
- Binding the wolf within - A Nordic poem on how to the God Tyr bound the Fenris wolf...and how we need to deal with our fears and doubts
- Tao te Ching - A few parts from the Tao te Ching that describes the Tao

There is so much more I wished to do in this year but I am happy for that which I was blessed with in 2012. Overall it was a good year of growth for me.
