Court cards in the Enneagram
Tarot
I have resumed the challenge of completing my personal Tarot deck. I still have the court cards outstanding. Given that the theme of my deck is Gurdjieff's thinking, I took upon myself to assign the 16 court cards of the Tarot onto the 9 points of the enneagram. The first obvious challenge is how does one reconcile sixteen with nine. Gurdjieff combines the law of three and the law of seven in his enneagram with the 9th point being shared between the heptad and triad. This posed an obvious solution. I assigned two cards to each of the heptad point and only one card each to the two remaining point of the triad. Since the Tarot court cards also reflects the four elements of fire, air, water and earth this schema is also linking these elements to the enneagram. Off course the background values I assign to each of the enneagram points are not pure Gurdjieffian and is based on a system I developed several years ago. I did however took the time to look at how much correspondence there is between the personality type enneagram and the court cards I have assigned. The personality enneagram is not directly linked to Gurdjieff.
Point 3,6 and 9 of the main triad are points of engagement with the external world. In order to designate this I have decided to put the more active knights on these points. In the illustration, the Knights are designated with a single + sign in the symbol. The symbols itself is red = fire or wands, yellow = air or swords, blue = water or cups and green = earth or pentacles. For the purpose of this I am using Kings, Knights, Queens and Princesses as my court cards. The King being the mature active male principle, The Knight the young active male principle, the Queen the Mature Receptive feminine principle and the Princess the Young receptive feminine principle. The knights are those active characters that must go out and in search of the holy grail, the damsel in distress or on a crusade against the enemy. So it makes sense to add the knights at points of engagement. Point 3 is the affirmative point of intent and I decided to put the Knight of Wands in this position. Wands are connected with the concept of need, desire and will. So the Knight of Wands is the one with the intent of what needs to be accomplished. Point 6 is the receptive point of conscience and/or intuition. This is the point where we tune into wisdom to assess whether the quest we are about to take is worth the while. There is no better place than placing the Knight of cups at this position. We are left at point nine with the Knight of Pentacles and the Knight of Swords to put at point 9. Both of these will designate momentum where the Knight of Pentacles will be linked with momentum based on our actions and the Knight of Swords will be the momentum based on our thoughts. Since point 1 is the point of philosophy or mental engagement it is appropriate to put the Knight of Swords as the beginning point of the enneagram and since point 8 is the point of realisation it makes sense to put the Knight of Pentacles as the end point of the the enneagram.
I decided to put the Queens on points 1 and 2 because these points are the birthing points of what is going to be manifested through the enneagram. The queen as the mature women makes more sense to put at these points than the younger feminine or princesses. The queens are designated in the illustration by a double - sign e.g. - -. Point 1 is the point of philosophy where we analyse and challenge our mindset, viewpoints or paradigms. I have designated the Queen of Wands and the Queen of Swords to this point....The Wands creates the desire and the idealism of the philosophy to make it edifying and meaningful while the Swords makes the points one of rational and critical thought. Points 2 is the point of looking at our potential and/or the potential of a situation as a whole. The Queen of Pentacles and the Queen of Cups fits snugly into this position. Remember point 1 is always the cause with point 2 being the effect. Point 2 is the point where we get insight into potential thus the Queen of Pentacles will provide a factual expression of value in terms of the latency in the situation while the Queen of Cups will give us a value assessment of the potential. Thus the Queen of Pentacles gives a quantitative viewpoint on potential and the Queen of Cups a qualitative viewpoint of value.

Points 4 and 5 is the points of transition of change and here we need young energy to make things happen. The Princesses are fitting the role well. The princesses are designated using a single minus sign. Point 4 is the point of romance or harmony where we appreciate what life offers us and brings to us. It makes sense then that the Princess of Pentacles will be at this point to indicate the sensual indulgence into life with all the senses. Also here is the Princess of Cups to allow us to sense harmony and express compassion and love into the world. This is the resting point after having set intent where we allow the universe to manifest opportunity. Point 5 is the point of opportunity. At this point we must assess the risk of the opportunity and develop the courage to take the opportunity. The princess of air will be well positioned at this point for it allows us to assess rationally the risk of the situation. However being young and naive the Princess of Swords will allow us to see the positives of the opportunity. The Princess of Wands is there to encourage us to dare to step outside of our comfort zone and into the unknown. It is worthwhile to note that at this point the causal point 4 is now earth and water with the effect at point 5 being dominated by fire and air.
Finally points 7 and 8 are where we realise the opportunity. The Kings are rulers, they manifest things as realities and again fits these points well. The Kings are designated by two plus signs in the elemental symbols. Point 7 is the point of possibility or the point where we step into action to begin manifesting change. At this point 7, the King of Swords shows that we must work from a plan toward a vision of what needs to be accomplished. On the other hand the King of Wands shows that we must have prepared ourselves in advanced for the action through disciplining ourselves and developing the required skills to arrest the opportunity into a possibility. The King of Wands at this point further emphasize the courage and determination we need to step into action. We have to overcome our fears and persist before we can taste success.
Point 8 is left with the King of Pentacles and the King of Cups. Point 8 is the point of realisation or accomplishment. We end the action at this point and we can judge the result of our actions. The King of Pentacles are very appropriate since we will be able to manifest actual change in the physical world that can be assessed quantitatively. The King of Cups will give us qualitative feedback on the value of that which has been manifested through the enneagram. What is established will create the momentum flowing into number 9 through the Knight of Pentacles to continue a process of transformation.
This designation is collaborated with the inner path of the hexad namely points 1,4,2,7,5 and 8 in the 4,2 and 7 are the earth/water cycle and 7,5,1 is the fire/air cycle.
According to the enneagram of personality types:
Point 1 is the Reformer. The Queen of Swords and the Queen of Wands are the Reformers providing us with a rational change of mind.
Point 2 is that of the helper. The Queen of Pentacles certainly has the resources to help and the Queen of Cups the compassion to help.
Point 3 is the point of the Achiever. I am sure the Knight of Wands has the action orientation and goal focused nature to be considered the achiever of the court cards.
Point 4 is the point of the Individualist. The Princess of Pentacles focused on the indulgence of senses can be easily seen as an individualist. The Princess of Cups brings the quality of valuing aesthetic beauty and who brings the individuality we so often see in artist to the front.
Point 5 is the point of the Investigator. The Princess of Swords and the Princess of Air analysing the patterns in search of opportunity can definitely be classified as investigators out to uncover new opportunities.
Point 6 is the point of the Loyalist who engages with responsibility. The Knight of Cups is the point where we look at our intuition and conscience and ask if our motivation is right or whether the opportunity is consistent with our moral compass. The Knight of cups certainly fits well with the description of Loyalist.
Point 7 is the point of the Enthusiast. No doubt in my mind that the King of Wands and the King of Swords will have the enthusiasm and courage to act with boldness and zeal.
Point 8 is the point of the Challenger described as self-confident, decisive and domineering. The King of Pentacles and the King of Cups will most certainly be willing to stand their ground once they have assessed that the action they have taken led both to a positive quantitative and qualitative change.
Point 9 is the point of the Peacemaker. Appropriate here is that the Knight of Pentacles must make peace with the momentum that has been created and the Knight of Swords must reconcile the what is with what could be and begin the new cycle of transformation.
