  • Leaving my Tai Chi school

    Leaving my Tai Chi school

    Life event

Today I sadly made the final decision to leave my Tai Chi school. This is due to a typical East meet West clash...or at least the way we generalize them. The Shifu announced that he wants his school to be more traditional Chinese since he is the seventh generation master of his particular line. The implication is however a far harsher means of discipline through punishment. Not greeting properly might for example demand 200 push-ups. The Shifu is to be obeyed at all times without question since he is the master.

For me it was too much of a price to pay. I could not sacrifice my individual right to this approach no matter how beneficial the Tai Chi was. I could not see eye to eye with the Shifu and consequently saw no other avenue but to resign.

This event took me back to the rights and liberty for which so many people have thought. The concepts of individual freedom that grew from the Greek Athenian culture to philosophers like  Jean Jacques Rousseau and Voltaire who were no genius but had the boldness to recognize the value of the individual.  This sense of equality and freedom was exported by the founding fathers of the USA to the new world. There liberty and equality was established as basic conditions of life. Today I realized how deeply I value the premise of equality and freedom. We so often see it as cheap because it is taken as the norm. However equality and freedom is something far more important and we should never forget how long it took to establish those values.

Sure, I might have over reacted and maybe the intent will not be applied with the same fierceness but for me it was a matter of principle. I had to stand up in this small way for the ideal of freedom and equality. We should never allow anything to erode these principles.

So now i am without a Tai Chi teacher but my conscience is clear.

I stand for the freedom and equality of all.

  • Enneagram

    Enneagram

    Systematics

I have developed my life philosophy around the three impulses of Momentum, Intent, Intuition. Today I was speculating if Momentum can not be replaced by Insight. The key thought behind it is that our awareness of momentum is the reconciliation between Intent and Intuition. The three words will then start with In which is indicative that it is a process of inner growth. Intent is affirmative, Intuition is receptive. However my fear is that the original meaning might be lost if the word stands on its own.

  • 2013 - Ego/Personality

    2013 - Ego/Personality

    Sacred contracts - The journey

    Chronos: Warrior
    Keiros: Story Teller
    Cosmic: Detective

Warrior: Despite what you think this year will require from you to be much more assertive than in the past. You allow yourself too much to be pushed around and you try too much to accommodate others. Look! I am not saying that you should declare war against everybody and try to take over the world. If I look at your year ahead then certainly a laissez faire approach is not going to get you to achieve your objectives. You have to many things that you need to achieve and can not leave it to change alone. Discipline and preparedness is the basis of any battle and you will have to make sure the basics are in place.

Story Teller: Your personal story of the year 2013 is still a blank slate. The story must still be told. Think about it, you want to be able to tell a story of victory and not one of tragedy. Your challenges will be the enemy...the bad guy. If you do not work against the resistance you find and if you do not overcome the almost impossible obstacles - then the story will be such a boring story. Imagine a story without a hero, what kind of story would that be. When you affirm yourself you might ran the risk of failure but it will make a good story. Even a tragedy is a better story if the hero is one that made a sincere attempt at victory. A lame hero simply makes up a lame story. So when you plan this year think about the story you hope to unfold. Do not set yourself easy targets and do not deny you the opportunity to achieve that which sounds impossible now. In many stories there are those who help the hero to achieve a great feat. Be aware from the beginning of the type of relationships you are going to need, the resources you are going to need if you want to succeed.

Detective: When you plan your world it will not be a simple case of smashing heads and telling stories. You will have to be continually aware of the present moment as you go along. Remember to be aware of the small clues that others leave. You can make plans and you can set goals but in the end you need to be aware of the the hints the universe will provide whether you are on the right path. Now in your planning think about what is needed to be aware. How are you going to be aware of gestures, facial expressions or  the traces of the past that is left behind for you to follow clues. You have to work at being personally aware, mindful and compassionate at all times. Only then can you express yourself fully when you can read the patterns of momentum that is impacting on your present moment at any time.

  • The paradoxity of existence

    The paradoxity of existence

    Impromptu philosophy

Our existence is more than just our physical presence. Our existence is not that which is published on the internet. Never in time was a single individual's presence simultaneously in the present moment as a physical moment as well as a presence across the globe. We have multiple accounts like Xanga and Facebook where we leave traces behind of an existence consisting of words, images and ideas. Some of those ideas are creative and others are merely a repeat of that which has touched us.  This external existence persists independent of us. There is false or hidden identities that is part of us and yet purposefully disconnected from the physical existence. As the internet progresses the world of electronic existence becomes more entangled and more and more of the individual is becoming known. Yet unlike the physical existence that is moving though time the electronic existence persists as if the past is in the present. What was written on a blog years ago can still be seen as if it was written today. When the blogs, comments and entries are put all together a different image of individuality emerges. The unfathomable depths  of the mind is being crystallized externally for whomever wants to see and learn. Somehow we disappear in the  sea of information and yet it is entirely possible to tune into a specific individual and see that person's life path playing like a movie in front of them. Even after physical existence ... the traces will be left behind of a person that once was.

In my mental deliberation of this world of electronic memory, electronic existence and connectivity I think about truth. My own truth. I look at the personality that emerges through the naughts and ones of electronic media and question whether it reflects the truth of the individual. We just write and respond from automatic impulse without standing still to ask ourselves the questions about how this will reflect on our being. The physical individuality, as a single instant in time and space could easily hide parts of self from another but in the world of the electronic self the limits of time and space is no longer applicable. What is said now does not disappear in the future, but is kept as a record for a length of time. We know about the dangerous of the electronic world where people lurk with ill intent to use information to steal identity and to launder cash or deprive another though fraud. These dangers are real and there are aspects of self that can never be fully disclosed in the world of electronic existence. Yet, when we believe everything is connected we have to know that existence is no longer just an moment in time and space. The "I" we refer to is a much more inclusive concept than in the past, broader, more complex and more integrated into our world of physical existence. All hang together and is dependent on the physical existence to continue to grow.  Like an umbilical cord the electronic existence is linked to the physical existence, able to grow only as long as the physical existence is fact.

How much of our electronic existence is transparent and how much is true? This is the question that was knocking in my mind. Maybe it is time again to stand still at the philosopher Jean Jacques Rousseau's confessions and ask whether we can be as brutally honest about our own existence.  Why is it that if somebody who knew a person for years suddenly realized they don't know the individual at all when they discover the electronic existence? Maybe today I have more questions in my mind than answers. Discovering the wider self and realizing that existence has become more than an instance is earth shattering in insight. We recall from science the dilemma that light behaves both as a particle and wave. When we meet the physical existence we engage on a particle level but when we engage on the electronic platform we engage on a wave level. Reflecting on this reality it is easy to begin to understand that we have an existence outside of time and space in the spiritual domain. We can begin to conceptualize the possibility of being a life-time rather than a moment. I have always maintained that the future and past is within the present moment. In my own mind this is not a blog to draw a conclusion but rather to question again my own concept of existence and wonder at how it is possible suddenly to be at a specific place and time and yet also present in the whole of the world continually influencing and engaging thoughts with other people. these are attributes we assigned to the gods in the past and yet now we live in a world where it is natural to be a global citizen of the world that speaks from the present as well as the past.

The realization of the expansion of presence of individuality is an area that needs some philosophical mental gymnastics. Time for each philosopher to spelunk existence in the electronic world.

  • Court cards completed

    Court cards completed

    Tarot

I finally completed the set of court cards for my personal Tarot deck. I am still 4 cards short to have a complete personal Tarot deck (the 10's of the suits are still missing). I used my own as well as art from my children to complete the cards and place each in the appropriate position on the enneagram as discussed in my previous writing.  These cards each tells a story given its position. My deck is not finished even when it is complete. The deck of cards was always meant to be an evolving deck that can change and evolve as I change and evolve.  When I look at the first cards I drew and the quality of some of the cards that form now the court cards then it is an amazing journey of improvement even though I can not dedicate the proper amount of time to art. I broke a bit from the traditional layouts by not including cups, swords wands and pentacles in the cards itself. Rather I used the colors and traditional elemental symbol to indicate what card it is. I have also not written the name of the cards to avoid classification in the use of the cards. I just placed a ++ to indicate the active mature element, -- the passive mature element, + the active young element and - as the passive young element. I myself use the terms King, Knight, Queen and Princess.

    1. Starting at node zero is the Knight of Swords depicted as an angel in battle with a dragon. A new cycle is started when we are facing our fears or see our own shortcoming in life. The dragon represent our attachment to the material or physical world while our spirit yearn towards freedom and higher values. It is the duality between the spiritual and physical that propels into an evolutionary cycle of personal growth and self improvement. The young active impulse is the start of a new cycle with the aim of creating new momentum away from the old.
    2. Point 1 is the point of philosophy where we challenge and question our believes. On the left is the Queen of Wands depicted as a lady making music. We seek harmony, coherency and meaning in our philosophy.  You will see at point 8 is the King of Cups ending the cycle of music. When we recognize the musical octave scale we will know that the path of progression is not just linear. When we focus our ideals on that which is lofty and uplifting we will find that there is harmony between our desires and our achievements.
    3. Point 1 has the Queen of Swords on the right hand side which is depicted by a young lady looking up to see a vision or gain a new insight into her understanding of the world. She represents the force through which we discriminate, compare, question and analyse our philosophy or paradigm. It is only through constantly challenging our mental paradigm that we can grow towards new insights. Without a sound personal philosophy as foundation we can not grow, we can merely remain stuck but when we have a solid philosophy it allows us entrance into the world of creativity.
    4. At Point 2 when we explore our philosophy with sincerity we discover that we can achieve far more of our full potential than what we are living at the moment. It is the Queen of Pentacles at the left that remind us of our limitations in terms of time and space that present the challenges we must over come. We understand our full potential better when we begin to grasp that we ourselves set our limits through our beliefs...and it uprooting limiting beliefs that allow us to seek new ways of living. Her world is grey and devoid of compromise but rather look at the world in terms of factual knowledge.
    5. At point 2 we also have the Queen of Cups (on the right) in her mysterious blue cloak.  She represent the mysterious world of the values that guides us into our action. Ultimately it is our values that determine what we can achieve in life. The queen of cups does not force a value system onto us but remind us that we need to continually investigate what values drives our actions.
    6. Point 3 is the point of intent. At this point we find the King of Wands embarking on the road towards his intent. He is equipped to fight for what he wants to achieve. The Kung-fu master is continually learning, continually practicing to become better with the long term vision in mind. He does not just want to obtain a singular objective but see each objective as part of the puzzle needed to build a new life.
    7. Point 4 is the point of harmony and romance and we find here the Princess of Pentacles on the left with a yin/yang symbol on her face. She sees balance between the desire of need and what we have. Forever she informs us to appreciate what we have and use it to its full rather than focus on the lack and what we do not have.
    8. Point 4 on the right has the Princess of Cups, depicted by a Lady looking away uninterested in what would be in the future but seeing those things that others dont see. Not looking from the picture is not a sign of ignorance but rather she sees that which other misses. She is aware of the backdrop of our life and how we need to seek the assistance of others and appreciate friendships for us to move forward. She does not rely on herself alone but look around for assistance.
    9. Point 5 on the left is the Princess of Wands looking for opportunities. She is a lady, awake and aware with a zeal for life. She lives with hope knowing that at any moment of time there are opportunities to move closer to what she wants. She does not hesitate to investigate life around her. Fully aware of the risk she remains unsatisfied to remain with the status quo by continually looking for opportunity to knock on the door.
    10. Point 5 on the right is the Princess of Air depicted by a young girl standing, looking at the immense ocean of possibilities.  She sees everything as an opportunity like a surfer waiting for the right wave to surf. She is young, to remind us that we need innocence to see the true value of the situation. Too often old thinking paradigms limit us and make us blind to see new opportunities. The Princess of Swords however is ever aware that we live in a universe of abundant opportunities is we are willing to look at the world through the eyes of a child.
    11. Point 6 is the point where we find the Knight of Cups as a Buddhist monk sitting in a temple reflecting with a bowl of water in his lap. He represents the moment of quietude before we take action, to test that action against our conscience. Do we act in service with compassion for our fellow human beings? The Knight of Cups reminds us that if we want to walk the path of divine enlightenment we must find space of solitude before the God of our heart and understanding and test our actions and desires for coherence with the divine and natural laws.
    12. Point 7 on the left is the King of swords ready and prepared to act. The face is that of the Nordic warrior Beowulf who was a mighty warrior that ruled his people. The kings are symbols of maturity. To act and increase the possibility of completing an action we must have the courage to act by stepping from our comfort zone into the unknown. We need to be disciplines but also have the determination to continue to succeed.
    13. Point 7 on the right is the King of Swords represented by a picture that was painted by Leonardo da Vinci of St Gerome the first Doctor in Theology. In this picture however Saint Gerome is slightly changed to have wings which shows the ability to fly. This emphasize the importance of proper planning and calculating of the costs before we act. The King of Swords not only plans but can now plot the path from the current situation to the future desired situation and actually see in our minds eye the changes that needs to take place.
    14. Point 8 on the left is the King of Pentacles...depicted only by the hand of a Nordic god holding a hammer. This is the depiction of ultimate creating a new or alternative failure. The mead pouring from the horn at the bottom reminds us that in this act of realization we will sacrifice time and energy in order to transform and/or change the world. The magic lies in doing.
    15. Point 8 on the right is the King of Cups represented by a violin player on his knees ending the song. It reminds us that everything comes to an end where we will be judged for our actions. It reminds us that at some point in time we will have to wrap things up and move on. It does not matter how good something might be, everything has the potential of becoming outdated and no longer adding value to our life.  We need to move on  at the appropriate time or else we get stuck and unable to move forward.
    16. Point 9 ends with the Knight of Pentacles. The Knight of Pentacles are represented by a dark brown wood elf with big eyes looking back at the results. ow that everything has been completed it is time to access what was good and what was bad and learn from the experience. Have we achieved the intent and have we remained in line with our conscience. The Knight of Pentacles calls us to remember ourselves and be aware of our circumstances and to see how we have progressed over time.

  • Court cards in the enneagram

    Court cards in the Enneagram

    Tarot

I have resumed the challenge of completing my personal Tarot deck. I still have the court cards outstanding. Given that the theme of my deck is Gurdjieff's thinking, I took upon myself to assign the 16 court cards of the Tarot onto the 9 points of the enneagram. The first obvious challenge is how does one reconcile sixteen with nine. Gurdjieff combines the law of three and the law of seven in his enneagram with the 9th point being shared between the heptad and triad. This posed an obvious solution. I assigned two cards to each of the heptad point and only one card each to the two remaining point of the triad. Since the Tarot court cards also reflects the four elements of fire, air, water and earth this schema is also linking these elements to the enneagram. Off course the background values I assign to each of the enneagram points are not pure Gurdjieffian and is based on a system I developed several years ago. I did however took the time to look at how much correspondence there is between the personality type enneagram and the court cards I have assigned. The personality enneagram is not directly linked to Gurdjieff.

Point 3,6 and 9 of the main triad are points of engagement with the external world. In order to designate this I have decided to put the more active knights on these points. In the illustration, the Knights are designated with a single + sign in the symbol. The symbols itself is red = fire or wands, yellow = air or swords, blue = water or cups and green = earth or pentacles.  For the purpose of this I am using Kings, Knights, Queens and Princesses as my court cards. The King being the mature active male principle, The Knight the young active male principle, the Queen the Mature Receptive feminine principle and the Princess the Young receptive feminine principle.  The knights are those active characters that must go out and in search of the holy grail, the damsel in distress or on a crusade against the enemy. So it makes sense to add the knights at points of engagement. Point 3 is the affirmative point of intent and I decided to put the Knight of Wands in this position. Wands are connected with the concept of need, desire and will. So the Knight of Wands is the one with the intent of what needs to be accomplished. Point 6 is the receptive point of conscience and/or intuition. This is the point where we tune into wisdom to assess whether the quest we are about to take is worth the while. There is no better place than placing the Knight of cups at this position.  We are left at point nine with the Knight of Pentacles and the Knight of Swords to put at point 9. Both of these will designate momentum where the Knight of Pentacles will be linked with momentum based on our actions and the Knight of Swords will be the momentum based on our thoughts.  Since point 1 is the point of philosophy or mental engagement it is appropriate to put the Knight of Swords as the beginning point of the enneagram and since point 8 is the point of realisation it makes sense to put the Knight of Pentacles as the end point of the the enneagram.

I decided to put the Queens on points 1 and 2 because these points are the birthing points of what is going to be manifested through the enneagram. The queen as the mature women makes more sense to put at these points than the younger feminine or princesses. The queens are designated in the illustration by a double - sign e.g. - -.  Point 1 is the point of philosophy where we analyse and challenge our mindset, viewpoints or paradigms. I have designated the Queen of Wands and the Queen of Swords to this point....The Wands creates the desire and the idealism of the philosophy to make it edifying and meaningful while the Swords makes the points one of rational and critical thought.  Points 2 is the point of looking at our potential and/or the potential of a situation as a whole. The Queen of Pentacles and the Queen of Cups fits snugly into this position. Remember point 1 is always the cause with point 2 being the effect. Point 2 is the point where we get insight into potential thus the Queen of Pentacles will provide a factual expression of value in terms of the latency in the situation while the Queen of Cups will give us a value assessment of the potential. Thus the Queen of Pentacles gives a quantitative viewpoint on potential and the Queen of Cups a qualitative viewpoint of value.

Points 4 and 5 is the points of transition of change and here we need young energy to make things happen. The Princesses are fitting the role well.  The princesses are designated using a single minus sign. Point 4 is the point of romance or harmony where we appreciate what life offers us and brings to us. It makes sense then that the Princess of Pentacles will be at this point to indicate the sensual indulgence into life with all the senses. Also here is the Princess of Cups to allow us to sense harmony and express compassion and love into the world. This is the resting point after having set intent where we allow the universe to manifest opportunity. Point 5 is the point of opportunity. At this point we must assess the risk of the opportunity and develop the courage to take the opportunity. The princess of air will be well positioned at this point for it allows us to assess rationally the risk of the situation. However being young and naive the Princess of Swords will allow us to see the positives of the opportunity. The Princess of Wands is there to encourage us to dare to step outside of our comfort zone and into the unknown. It is worthwhile to note that at this point the causal point 4 is now earth and water with the effect at point 5 being dominated by fire and air.

Finally points 7 and 8 are where we realise the opportunity. The Kings are rulers, they manifest things as realities and again fits these points well. The Kings are designated by two  plus signs in the elemental symbols. Point 7 is the point of possibility or the point where we step into action to begin manifesting change. At this point 7, the King of Swords shows that we must work from a plan toward a vision of what needs to be accomplished. On the other hand the King of Wands shows that we must have prepared ourselves in advanced for the action through disciplining ourselves and developing the required skills to arrest the opportunity into a possibility. The King of Wands at this point further emphasize the courage and determination we need to step into action. We have to overcome our fears and persist before we can taste success.

Point 8 is left with the King of Pentacles and the King of Cups. Point 8 is the point of realisation or accomplishment. We end the action at this point and we can judge the result of our actions. The King of Pentacles are very appropriate since we will be able to manifest actual change in the physical world that can be assessed quantitatively. The King of Cups will give us qualitative feedback on the value of that which has been manifested through the enneagram.  What is established will create the momentum flowing into number 9 through the Knight of Pentacles to continue a process of transformation.

This designation is collaborated with the inner path of the hexad namely points 1,4,2,7,5 and 8 in the 4,2 and 7 are the earth/water cycle and 7,5,1 is the fire/air cycle.

According to the enneagram of personality types:

Point 1 is the Reformer. The Queen of Swords and the Queen of Wands are the Reformers providing us with a rational change of mind.

Point 2 is that of the helper. The Queen of Pentacles certainly has the resources to help and the Queen of Cups the compassion to help.

Point 3 is the point of the Achiever. I am sure the Knight of Wands has the action orientation and goal focused nature to be considered the achiever of the court cards.

Point 4 is the point of the Individualist. The Princess of Pentacles focused on the indulgence of senses can be easily seen as an individualist. The Princess of Cups brings the quality of valuing aesthetic beauty and who brings the individuality we so often see in artist to the front.

Point 5 is the point of the Investigator. The Princess of Swords and the Princess of Air analysing the patterns in search of opportunity can definitely be classified as investigators out to uncover new opportunities.

Point 6 is the point of the Loyalist who engages with responsibility. The Knight of Cups is the point where we look at our intuition and conscience and ask if our motivation is right or whether the opportunity is consistent with our moral compass. The Knight of cups certainly fits well with the description of Loyalist.

Point 7 is the point of the Enthusiast. No doubt in my mind that the King of Wands and the King of Swords will have the enthusiasm and courage to act with boldness and zeal.

Point 8 is the point of the Challenger described as self-confident, decisive and domineering. The King of Pentacles and the King of Cups will most certainly be willing to stand their ground once they have assessed that the action they have taken led both to a positive quantitative and qualitative change.

Point 9 is the point of the Peacemaker. Appropriate here is that the Knight of Pentacles must make peace with the momentum that has been created and the Knight of Swords must reconcile the what is with what could be and begin the new cycle of transformation.
