  • 2011 review

    A review of #2011

    #Work

I started 2011 making a major change in my life. I moved out of my own consulting business into a normal day job. I started to work as the MIS manager. My mission was to establish the discipline of Information Resource Management. When I started their was only an Information and communication technology strategy but no information strategy. In April I did my first presentation to the ICT Steering committee, putting forward the concept of an Information management framework. The presentation set into motion a process of evolving the concept of performance management and business intelligence through a management dashboard. I focused on getting a common requirement defined for an management dashboard that can be used for institutional performance management, monitoring and evaluation and oversight. In November the solution design was confirmed when I attended a Conference. The business case itself was developed with input from key stakeholders and finally included in a larger more expansive business case. So the process moved from concept to a solution design and business case in the year. I hope that in 2011 the funds will be released so that this project moves from solution design into an actual implemented solution. Getting the solution to work might be another two to three years. In terms of the team I had to managed I put into place more frequent team meetings and progress reports so that the team can cooperate better in achieving the targets we set as a team. I got involved in a number of acquisition decisions of large scale solutions and learned much about how the politics of the institution works. Overall an enjoyable year with acceptable progress.

    #Studies

In March/April 2011 I started with my PhD in Industrial Engineering. Over the year I developed my thesis proposal and presented the ideas twice. The proposal has not been finally accepted but I hope that I can reach that point early in 2012.

    #Health

In October 2011 I expanded my stav to include Tai Chi. This was a wonderful new adventure and I am totally in love with Tai Chi. The slow movement and focus on breathing and meditation added further to me feeling much more healthy. I am still maintaining my Stav training. In terms of stav, just before October, I bought myself an actual fighting staff to practice with. I hurt my stomach muscles badly initially with a twisting movement. I was in pain for several days before my muscles returned to normal. I hope to continue my Tai Chi training in 2012.

I started in all seriousness doing practical alchemy in May this year working with herbs. I made my tinctures and use them to maintain my health through a daily herbal tincture, using a different tincture for every day of the week. This successfully kept me healthy throughout the winter. Near the end of the year, I struggled to find the time for Alchemy and slipped a bit in making my tinctures...and failing to make a plant stone. However the interest is not past...I hope to get fully involved into the process and my study of herbal theories in 2012.

    #Finances

My finances did not improve much over the year. Rather the trend is backwards rather than forwards even though my job gave some stability. The year was one of increased costs. In South Africa the cost of petrol and electricity increased the burden on all South Africans giving secondary inflation pressure on basic food and services. The world wide recession did not assist at all. At least my debt burden (excluding the fact that I bought a car) did not increase. So Finances was flat with a slight declining trend.

    #Communication

I was the club president of my Toastmasters club until June when we reach the Toastmaster's year end and give over to a new exco. The transition was fluid and my club achieved a Select distinguished club status. I supported my club further after that in terms of being the Past President of the club at exco meetings. My role is mainly to support the new executive and ensure a continuation across the different clubs. Since my own club is very active I did not had many opportunities to do presentations. I only did three presentations from the advanced manual - Speeches by management. My big accomplishment in this year was actually to get my eldest daughter to join Toastmasters in May 2011. Since she is mentally challenged and could not complete normal school it was a huge challenge for her. However in Toastmasters there is the spirit of mutual support and she blossomed. Her interpersonal communication skills developed and she did three speeches in six months.

I participated successfully in the the evaluations competition and later in the humorous competition. In terms of the humorous competition I outdid myself by winning on both club level and area level. Truly a major breakthrough for me, since I never saw myself as a humorous person.

    #Spirituality

I continued with my studies in the Rosicrucian philosophy and it remains to me a valued path of inner exploration that leads to outer service to humanity. In  November I had the honor of being able to do a presentation to the group of active participants during a full day away. This was also the first time I brought by middle daughter with me. She is very interested in the mystical path and was overjoyed to meet other similar thinking people.

I started a series of writings, in May 2011, exploring the deeper meaning of the Havamal...the rune song of Odin according to the Armanen Futhork interpretation.  I covered the first 8 of 18 songs and will continue with the series in this year. Not a very popular series in terms of getting comments but a valuable exercise for myself.

    #Art

I did my first oil painting at the end of 2010 and continued with a few paintings in 2012 of which my most successful one was a paining of David Garrett the violin player, painted in April 2011. I continued with my sketch a day project but really neglected my sketching in the last six months. I only did 20 pencil sketches in the whole of 2011. I hope to finish another two paintings before the end of 2011.

    #Political participation

I played the role of a registration officer for a group of Afrikaners who held an election to select leaders to negotiate with the current government for their independence. This is based on the country's constitution and  international law which recognises the right of independence. I also volunteered my house as an election point and played the role of chief election officer. Participation in this process was fun and something I am proud to have been part off. Whether the process would achieve what it sets out to achieve...I do not know. It remains a highlight of 2011 to have been part of such a process based on order and peaceful negotiation. After all it was the first Boer elections in a hundred years.

In May 2011 we had our local elections where I voted. My party showed no growth which was a disappointment.

In September 2011 I participated in South Africa The National Planning Council's online debate about South Africa in 2030. This was a unique event where South African's used the networking technology to converse with each other across the country to share their vision for South Africa.

    #Transport

I bought a new car in February 2011 after much deliberation...A 2.5 Subaru Legacy with all the bells and whistles I always wanted in a car. The price was heavy but I got it at a good price below its book value.

    #Technology

I moved onto BlackBerry for my mobile technology and loved the change. I did my first blog entry on a cell phone and started to use Xanga's mobile site more and more for checking on my blog and following some of my favorite bloggers. I did my first Xanga Vlog...which was no great success but I am no longer a virgin to the vlog.

    #Xanga

I participated in Xanga's member participation program. Was lovely to have an hour long discussion over Skype with Xanga on how I feel about Xanga, the mobile site and sharing ideas for improvement. I do not know if any of the thoughts went into an actual change on Xanga but the process was great. Xanga introduced the @ function to reference other Xangans as well as the # to add in-text tags.

I  posted this year my sketch a day series, Armanen futhark series and my dream journal series.  The first always gets good comments while the latter was a very interesting exercise as I began to see patterns in my dream world.

I participated in the Blogathon week in March by @john and the Short Fiction Summer Scavenger Hunt hosted by @anvilsandedelweiss in July 2011 -  although I never got to all the entries I was supposed to write. In October I participated in the Winnetou writing contest by @bmojsilo. And in November I participated in the Positivity Week Blog Challenge by @Shining_Garnet

My most precious entry for the year was Mystical prayer of 7 August 2011 got only 3 comments but it is truly the best of my blogging.  On 9 October I shared how to write your own spiritual book.

My most commented on entry was Contemplating suicide which I wrote on 9 January 2011, shortly followed by an entry Xanga ethics written on 4 May 2011

    In the news

South Africa continues in its usual trend. A highlight was the rugby World Cup even though South Africa was robbed by the referee of  reaching the semi-finals. In the Cricket world-cup South Africa also did not made the top position. On the political landscape the ruling party seems to continue to try and reduce the governance of the law. However the local elections was peaceful and without any incidents...in some ways despite crime levels the Democracy of South Africa is still vibrant. The prodical son of the ruling party, Julius Malema, met his match when he was finally disciplined by the party....he has appealed the outcome of the hearing.

On an international front the biggest events that caught my attention were the killing of Osama bin Laden and later Muammar Gadafi.

  • 2012 astrology overview

    #2012 #Astrology overview

From an Astrological perspective there is a significant shift from 2011 into 2012. Almost all the outer planets will be shifting into new signs. Saturn will round off this shift into a new era on 12/10/2012 but most of the action will be just before or just after 1/1/2012. Jupiter would sit snugly in Taurus, which mean expansion will require effort. Uranus will move into Aries which mean even the bold will think before they leap and finallly Pices will be happy as Neptune the watery planet moves into Pisces.

What does this all mean? Libras will breath a bit more easily after October 2012, happy to say good bye to the hard rule of Saturn. For those Librans who submitted to the discipline of Saturn, a time of bloom is to dawn...especially with Uranus in Aries Libra people might make many quick decisions, contrary to their nature. Libra's must be careful not to make too quick decisions. Libra's might even be rewarded a bonus or two when Jupiter moves throug Gemini in the latter half of the year.

Scorpions will receive Saturn. Knowing the nature of Scorpio, I doubt if it will be a happy match. Saturn is not exactly a sensitive bed fellow. It might be a time for discovering a few conspiracy theories, because scorpio people will be more acute at seeing things people in power tries to hide.

Aquarius people will find greater stability as Neptune leaves Aquarius. It will be a good time to stop being concerned and be creative. As said earlier Pisces people generally woud be more difficult to pin down but they will be happy having Neptune in their sign. Luck is on the side of Pisces people. 2011 was a time of strain for Pisces who had been challenge to think a lot more with Uranus in Pisces but with Neptune Pisces will simply tune into intuition and make right decisions even if it is counter to what makes logically sense. Overall it will mean a greater emotional intelligence for the world.

As said Aries will be doing more thinking befoe jumping in. This is good for humanity as a whole. Hopefully this will have an influence of greater peace in the world and less war.

Jupiter will travel in the year through Taurus, Gemini and Cancer. Maybe it is difficult to get Taurus people to move but once they do...they are unstoppable. There is no doubt that the first few months of 2012 are going to be moving and shaking...no time for sitting back else you will be left behind. You can bet that once Jupiter moves into Gemini there are going to be plenty of new opportunities. It might be a less stable part of the year but certainly with an abundance of opportunity. All will solidify and get meaning to the end of the year when Jupiter reaches Cancer. Next year's thanksgiving and Chritmas would be the best in a long time as Jupiter places the emphasis back on family values.

These are the major influences. The signs not mentioned will experience a bit more of the same. Leo will be slightly more able to express themselves as Uranus moves out of Aquarius.

Virgo will be less confronted with emotional issues and more with intellectual issues. Neither being Virgo's comfort zones. So for Virgo there state of anxiety will remain the same but the nature of the problems the face will shift.

Sagittarius can adventure as normal. Sagittarians must beware however not overextend their traveling during the latter part of the year.

Capricorns are still the happy hosts of Pluto for the time to come. The keep an eye on the long term. However Capricorns can benefit from Jupiter in Taurus in the beginning of 2012. Indeed investments made early this year may be very rewarding for Capricorns in the long run.

    Summary:
Aries - think before you leap for a change, and more of what you start will succeed. Affirmation - I think before I act
Taurus: time to take action in the first few months...make every moment count. Affirmation: I am action in motion - unstoppable
Gemini: make use of the many opportunities later this year. Affirmation: I am ready to seize new opportunities
Cancer: The latter part of the year belongs to Cancer - patience is a virtue. Affirmation: Good things comes to those who are patient
Leo: more space for self-expression. Affirmation: I shine all on my own
Virgo: the nature of the pro blem changes but the level of stress remains. Affirmation: I breath and harmony returns
Libra: as the year passes things only become better and better. Affirmation: My discipline is a firm foundation for tomorrow.
Scorpio. At the end of the year you will begin to see more throug people than before. Affirmation: I see with clarity through the illusion of lies created buy others. I can not be deceived.
Sagittarius: More of the same but be cautious of over extending your adventures. Affirmation: I am free to explore
Capricorn: Think long term but put actions behind those plans early in this year. Affirmation: I invest in the future
Aquarius: Time to solve those insolvable puzzles. Things are perky and getting better. Affirmation: I release negative emotions and engage in positive creative thought
Pisces: You are in your nature, embrace your intuition...sense the need of the world. Affirmation: Embrace your intuition and enligten all.

  • The paradox of being South African

We all sometimes joke aboout the country we live in. Here is a tongue in the cheek view of life in South Aafrica:

SOUTH AFRICA is a great country because:
    1. You can eat half dried meat and not be considered disgusting.
    2. Nothing is your fault, you can blame it all on apartheid.
    3. You can experience bad service in 11 official languages.
    4. Where else can you get oranges with 45% alcohol content at rugby matches?
    5. It's the only country in the world where striking workers show how angry they are by dancing.
    6. You're considered clumsy if you cannot use a cell phone, change cd's, drink a beer, put on make-up, read the newspaper and smoke, all at the same thime while driving a car at 160kph in a 60kph zone.
    7. If you live in Johannesburg, you get to brag about living in the most dangerous city in the world.
    8. Burglar bars become a feature, and a great selling point for your house.
    9. You can decorate your garden walls with barbed wire.
    10. The tow-trucks are first at the scene for most major crimes, without being called. The police you have to call about 3times.
    11. Votes have to be recounted until the right party wins.
    12. Illegal immigrants leave the country because the crime rate is too high.
    13. The police asks you if they must follow up on the burglary you've just reported.
    14. The prisoners get to strike and vote in elections!
    15. The police stations have panic buttons to call armed response when they are burgled.

    -----------------
Funny thing is that most of the above is true

  • Making sense

In this land, I walk as a stranger. Every moment is filled with mystery. My mind blinded by amnesia. Yet I have acquired the wisdom of life times. Life unfolds over and over again. As the old is stripped away, the light shines brighter. The swamp I could not avoid... I sank into its mud...almost stuck. Somehow by divine grace a hand appeared form beyond and lift me back onto my feet. Pleasure is a blessing for the now but leaves the yearning for more behind. Why have I forgotten my purpose? What magic is on this road that I forget who I am? From start I need to learn within burns a tiny light, that can turn into a blaze when connected to the eternal source. When all within illuminates, then all makes sense.

  • Constricter

    Limbs growing heavy
    Memory fade in the mist
    Future doomed for failure
    Active mind reduced

    Muscle coils around and around
Sands of time slowely through the hole
    Silent screams fill the air
    Breathless desire for life

    The calmness within
    The calmness within
Harmony, harmony the song of balance
A trust in life, a scoop of hope

    Darkness robs more light
And within the forest the howl
    Shivering cold and predator's stealth
Day for now an empty dream

    Within a small fire burns
    Within the rose blooms
    Within the guardian angel sing
The light of day wil soon be born

  • Balance and harmony

    Balance and harmony

Tai Chi has really stroke a cord with me. I have embrased it with a passion. What a lovely complement it is to my usual stav training! Tai Chi requires more space to move in than stav but it is lovely to just feel the flow of movement. For years I realised that my life is not well balanced in the physical aspect of being. I was never good at sport and consequently was never atuned to physical exercises. I tried the route of buying exercise equipment and I tried going to the  gymnasium. None of these methods really worked. Consequently, year in and year out, I would ponder my goals for the year and realise that although I have no major illness, my maintenance of body health was a weakness. I want to have a balanced life that balance social, physical, spiritual and creative pursuits. The balance between work and play was always important.

But whenever I look back...the physical side was lacking in terms of time spend. Stav, training was my entry point into becoming physically more active. I could connect stav to my interest in the runes and in the process the physical connected with my mental pursuits. Stav is a fairly simple set of 16 postures combined with breathing and sound. I could easily sit aside 15 minutes a day as a minimum to practice stav on a daily basis. Now that I found the benefit and discipline to practice on a daily basis, it was a good move to extend my practise to something like Tai Chi. Although it is different in many aspects to stav it is helping me to develop my program of physical maintenance further. Again the ability to combine a meditative approach to a physical exercise is very appealing to me. Tai Chi has been shortened for beginners like me to include 24 forms or basic movements...they all seem complex until being mastered. I know about 50 % of the forms. It takes time to acquire a skill but it becomes more and more entrenched in the memory of the body. I feel light, I feel healthy and I feel energised. Balance always brings a greter sense of harmony.

When there is no harmony the elements that are out of sync can be destructive. Seeking a balance in life might not make you rich or famous but it can be applied as a principle at any stage of life irrespective of where you find yourself. Balance brings harmony and harmony is a stepping stone to a happy life.
